Familie MAYER
Long-established family in the Swabian Remstal near Stuttgart – excellent source material
The Mayers were a long-established and reasonably wealthy winegrowing family in Großheppach. Friedrich Immanuel Mayer married his cousin Elisabethe Pauline Mayer in 1893.
The available source material is very good to excellent. In most of the surrounding Protestant villages, church records date back to the mid-16th century. Many civic sources are also available. These are mostly from private individuals from the mid-17th century, but in some cases even earlier. Such as recruiting resp. residents lists “Musterungslisten” from the 16th century.
My mother’s paternal ancestors were mostly winemakers, sometimes craftsmen. Marriages occurred within the village, rarely with someone from the neighboring village. Very rarely from further away. The average age of marriage was around 25. There were plenty of children, but infant mortality was also significantly higher. There were also repeated epidemics. Most notably, the pest, which claimed many lives. In the lower Remstal, for example, in 1596 (red dysentery), 1607 (pest), 1611 (pest), 1626 (the great pest), and 1635/36 (pest).
A detailed list can be found here in the form of a Kekulé-sorted ancestry list.
