Current distribution of the surname Callenius

Fortunately (for genealogy research), the surname is very rare and making it relatively easy to research.

The family name Callenius and its corresponding spellings are currently found particular in Europe, North America, and South America. Naturally, the American occurrences have migrated out of Europe. Interestingly, the surname “Calenius” (with one “L”) is far less rare in Finland than in Germany.

Living Namesakes

The number of people with the surname Callenius is very limited. I have created a map from various available sources showing where family members live today, i.e., how Callenius families are distributed around the globe. I would like to point out that this is a snapshot in time and that the data is not complete.

USA

Most individuals with the surname Callenius are currently found in North America.

According to “forbears.io“, 89 of these individuals live in the USA.

Many reside in Louisiana, primarily in Florida, Texas, and the Midwest (Minnessota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Iowa). This is also evident from the long Callenius lineages.

From Germany to USA

According to my previous research, all Callenius families living in the USA today are descended from German immigrants.

Largest Callenius family in the USA

One of the largest, or perhaps the largest, family groups centered in Iowa descends from the emigrant Adolph Friedrich Callenius. He was born on June 3, 1834, in Dorum, the son of Otto Christian Ludewig Callenius and Anna Elisabeth Heynsohn, and is thus the grandson of the progenitor Otto Ludwig Callenius (1752–1828) of the German Dorum line.

Here is the baptismal register entry of the parish of Dorum from the year 1834:

"[Taufe am] 14 t[en] [Juni 1834] / Callenius Otto Christian Ludwig, pensionirter Fähnrich in Dorum, u. dessen Ehefrau Anna Elisabeth Heinsohn am 3 t[en] Juni geb. Sohn, gen. Adolph Fridrich. T[auf] z[eugen] Adolph Behen, Lieutenant in Stade 2, Joh. Friedr. Jacobi. 3, Bernhard Callenius [Bem: ein Onkel]" (Translation: [Baptism on] the 14th of June 1834 / Callenius Otto Christian Ludwig, retired ensign in Dorum, and his wife Anna Elisabeth Heinsohn, born on the 3rd of June, son, called Adolph Fridrich. Baptismal witnesses: Adolph Behen, lieutenant in Stade 2, Joh. Friedr. Jacobi 3, Bernhard Callenius [Note: an uncle])

Adolf Friedrich Callenius emigrated to the USA around 1860 and married Metta Eggers there around the same time (their first child, George H. Callenius, was born on July 30, 1861, in New York). He lived briefly in Illinois (1865) and finally settled in Baker, O’Brien, Iowa, also in 1865. In the USA, he called himself “Adolph William Callenius” or “Adolph F. L. Callenius.” He died on June 2, 1914 (gravestone) in Primghar, O’Brien, Iowa.’

As far as my research has shown, Adolph had three sons: George H. Callenius (born 1861), Otto F. L. Callenius (born 1862), and William Callenius (born 1873/74), and a daughter, Annie Callenius (born 1867). A considerable number of these children are still living today. Nearly all Calleniuses currently living in Iowa are descended from them.

More emigrants to the USA

Further emigrants to North America can be found in various older records and emigrant lists. For example:

Carl F. Callenius: Born in Germany, he became an American citizen in 1856 and lived in New York.

Theodor Callenius: Born in 1840, this merchant arrived by ship from Bremen on March 27, 1865, at Ellis Island.

Jacob Callenius: Born in 1832, this later physician arrived by ship in 1867 and settled. He lived in Massachusetts in 1880 and then in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, in 1900.

Jacob Callenius: Another Jacob, born in 1835, immigrated to the USA in 1871.

Nathan or Nathan William Callenius: Immigrated in 1883. Both his parents were from Germany.

William Callenius: Born in 1858, he immigrated to East Feliciana, Louisiana, in 1883. He was originally from Hesse.

Jacob Callenius: Born in 1858, he immigrated to East Feliciana, Louisiana, in 1883. Michael J. Callenius: He is said to have immigrated to the USA in 1885 and to have been born around 1870.

Hermann Alexander Callenius: Arrived in the USA in 1896 at the age of 14 and obtained US citizenship in 1902. Both his parents were from Germany.

Germany

The second most common occurrence is in Germany. According to “forbears.io“, the indication is 38 people. They are distributed fairly evenly across the country, with almost all demonstrably attributable to the same family.

Callenius' places in Germany

South America

With 22 individuals, Argentina has the third highest number of people with the surname Callenius. It is possible that they all originate from a single immigrant family.

Current concentrations are found around Buenos Aires and in some more widely dispersed cities, such as La Rioja, Tucman, and Victoria.

Callenius' places in South America

From Germany to South America

Unfortunately, I haven’t made much progress here yet. While I’ve managed to establish a few contacts in Argentina, their origins remain largely unknown. I also frequently encounter language difficulties.

Most Callenius family members living in South America today reside in Argentina. How the family (or families) got there is still unclear to me. One clue is a Carlos Gustavo Ernesto Francisco Callenius, son of Gustavo Callenius and Thea Holznagel who is said to have emigrated to Rio in 1958.

And according to Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Immigration Cards, 1900-1965, he was supposedly born on July 31, 1924, in Baden. According to New York Passenger and Crew Lists, 1909, 1925-1957, he was also born in 1924, but in Argentina. One should always be very skeptical of the birthplaces listed.

Whether and how this person is related to the Argentinians with this name living today is completely unclear. I can identify many family members in Argentina, especially through social media. However, how they are connected is also unknown. I hope for the cooperation of these family members. I welcome any information and will definitely reply (wolfram@callenius.eu).

Scandinavia – many Callenius in Northern Europe

The name Callenius appears in various spellings in Finland, Sweden, and Norway. One of my former Finnish colleagues, Tanu Niemi, once told me that Callenius is a fairly common name in Finland. However, even in Finland, the name isn’t exactly frequent in telephone directories.

The spelling varies more significantly in the Nordic countries. There, you’ll also find Calenius, Källenius, and similar variations. Incidentally, Ola Källenius, who is of Swedish descent, has been a member of the board of management of Daimler AG since 2015 (see image, source: www.daimler.com).

To what extent, and if at all, these are related to their German namesakes remains completely unclear. During my research in the archives of www.ancestry.com and others, I came across several Callenius family members whose lineage dates back to the mid-18th century. For example:

Finland:

Gabriel Callenius: oo 1767 with Kirstin Johansdr, a son is baptized in Karjalohja Uusimaa
Maria Callenius: oo before 1755 with Thom Yleen, children are born in Lammi.
Anna Callenius: oo before 1819 with Johan Puuka, children are baptized in Raisala Vipuri.
Carl Callenius: lives 1841 in Liperi, Kuopio
Frans Callenius: lives 1890 in Kymi

Sweden:
Catharina Cecilia Callenius: oo before 1779 with Lars Högberg, children are babpized in Stockholm.
Joan Israel Christophersson Callenius: born 14.06.1765 in Stockholm
Carl Georg Callenius: born 1857 in Adolf Fredriks Församling

However, the naming laws and rules in Sweden before 1900 were extremely unusual compared to Germany – let’s say – and very liberal.
