Protestantic
church in Lenzen
(Polish: Łęczno)
The ancestors of my grandmother
(fathers side) with the family name Kath, Weske, Labrenz, Treichel,
Schwanten, Dilgen, Janke and
Jesken came from Pomerania. More precisely they came from near
of
Karlino (German Körlin). Today it is politically part of Poland. Otto Paul Emil Kath from Lenzen married
1898 Ida Diebold from
Eichstetten in Baden, which is in southwest of Germany. The family
setteled there in Eichstetten. See also at
Otto Paul Emil Kath
(# 10).
Until now there are four
villages known, where the families came from: Lenzen, Grüssow,
Dassow
and Alt Marrin.
It took a while until I
localized these villages as some of them are quite small and old maps
are not available with a good scale. All four
villages are located in the county Western Pomerania (Województwo
Zachodniopomorskie)
and they are located quite narrow. and in the near of Belgard. Lenzen and Grüssow
located south of the E6 and Dassow and
Alt.Marrin noth of that streeet.
With a journey to Poland it was
able for me to visit all that villages. The area is very nice
and dominated by agriculture. It is penetrated by oak-lined
avenues and bigger forrests. Mainly fields of grain and meadows you
will find. The surrounding is slightly hilly. The sandy ground is
perfect for grain and potatoes. The wood deliveres in autumn mushrooms
and blueberries which you can buy everywhere along the roads during
this period.
Industrial comapanies you will see only in cities. It seem
that the people live from agriculture only out of the cities.
The price nivea is beneath that
of Germany. Especially to go out for lunch or dinner is much cheaper
(as there is a restaurant at all). Near of the sea it is possible to
buy very good and fresh fish. direct from marine. Mainly codfisch and
flat fisch, like plaice or sole. Sometimes also herring or
salmon.

Is
the biggest of those four
villages. The numbers of inhabitants is not easy to estimate. Maybe
something around 300
people.
The
town has a nice, formidable church
which is
aligned to the east from the 15./16. century. As far as I understand
from the interiour the brick-builded church, it will be used nowerdays
as a katholic church. It was protestantic in former days. Unfortunately
the church was closed with a massive mesh. I ws able to make pictures
but only from outside. I coukld not find a pastor.
The church itself and the churchyard is totally unadorned beside of a
sstatue of Maria, chich is quite new.
Interesting
the sign at
the
external wall of the church. The pulpit and altar are old and from 1st
half 17.
century.
At
the churchyard
there
were surely graves in the past. This can be seen at the slightly waved
ground. Now there is grass growing. Around the churchyard there are
placed many old trees. They are obvisouly from 19th or 18th
century.
Around
the church there are many
old houses. Mostly farms.
Some of them are semi-derelict, some of them
are renovated. The basic fabric can be dated before the second world
war. This is similar to many rually small towns. Sidewalks are not
existent. But the streets are mostly paved. From time to time there can
be found cobblestone pavements.
The
small town is characterized
by agrigerian.
Industrial companies are inexistent. Around the town
there are bigger fields. Growing mostly gain. Different streets meet in
the town. But no main street. The streets are mostly avenues with old
trees.
In
the church there happened
1850 the marriage of my grand-grand parents August Ludwig Kath
from Lenzen and Wilhelmine Karoline Weske from Alt Marrin.

Grüssow (Gruszewo):
latitude:
53°56'49.16"N
longitude:
15°57'32.03"E |
Small village 3 km south of
Lenzen with around 10 to 15 buildings. All buildings are, more or less,
located at the main street. The main street is paved. No sidewalks.
People walkin on streets. Also very rural.

Dassow
(Daszewo):
latitude:
54° 4'40.69"N
longitude:
15°52'51.04"E |
Dassow is across the east-west
axis E6 which connects Stettin with Danzig, 20 north of Lenzen.
Also this village is very rural. Some buildings are around. Maybe 150
people are living there. Problably there was an estate in former days.
Some of the buildings are in very bad
conditions or already ruined.
In the near of the next bigger street, 2 km off the village, there is a
big industrial company. Maybe a paper
mill. In Dassow directly there are no companies or
mom-and-pop stores. |
Alt Marrin
(Mierzyn):
latitude:
54° 6'47.27"N
longitude:
15°52'55.25"E |
From Dasso there are only 3,5 km
north to Alt Marrin. In between there is a small branch to Neumarrin.
Altmarrin is a junction of 5 or 6 streets. But all looks very introspectively.
People walking along the street, children are playing
on the roadside. Houses and greens are partly in very good conditions,
sometimes not. Also the structure of the buildings is mixed. Some are
old, some buildings are from 2nd half of 20th century. But those are
very well-kept.
There is a church
in Alt
Marrin. But this is a catholic church, which was built in the 2nd half
of 19th century. In former times the whole region was protestantic. I
have not seen an older, protestantic church. But there must be one
once, as Altmarrin had an own parish. And an ancestor of mine, Pagel
Wilhelm Welske from Dassow, married 1810 in Altmarrin her wife Dorothea
Regina Treichel from Marrin. |
